DAIRY FARMING IN INDIA
The importance of dairy enterprise in the national economy can be gauged from the fact that the value of output from milk group is highest among all the agricultural commodities, accounting for nearly one fourth of the value of output from agricultural sector. Dairying is one of the most important means of providing livelihood and nutritional security to the rural masses.
The livestock activities, among which dairy farming predominates, employ about 8.5 million workers in the country. Milk and milk products account for 9.2 and 12.4 percent of protein intake in rural and urban areas, respectively, which is higher than the protein intake through non-vegetarian animal products.
The increased production of milk has improved the per capita milk availability to 250 grams per day. The demand of milk and milk products in India is projected to increase to 142.9 million tones in 2015 and further to 191.3 million tones in 2020.
AGRICULTURE IN CONTEMPORARY INDIA
Agriculture, with its allied sectors, is unquestionably the largest livelihood provider in India, more so in the vast rural areas. It also contributes a significant figure to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Sustainable agriculture, in terms of food security, rural employment, and environmentally sustainable technologies such as soil conservation, sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity protection, are essential for holistic rural development. Indian agriculture and allied activities have witnessed a green revolution, a white revolution, a yellow revolution and a blue revolution.

- The total Share of Agriculture & Allied Sectors (Including Agriculture, Livestock, forestry and fishery sub sectors) in terms of percentage of Gross Domestic Product is 13.9 percent during 2013-14 at 2004-05 prices.
- For the 12th Plan (2012-17), a growth target of 4 percent has been set for the Agriculture Sector.
- As per the 4th Advance Estimates of Production of food grains for 2013-14, total food grain production is estimated to be 264.77 million tons.
